Vietnam: A Book of Changes

Epstein's color pictures from Vietnam are so flat-out beautiful they tend to overwhelm judgment. Taken in the north and south over the past few years, these are images of a country at once rooted in history and unmoored in time. Epstein's take can be sly and oddly tangential, but even his still lifes are ripe with color, and his pictures of people bristle with casually cinematic incident and gesture. This is rich, engrossing work from one of the year's best books, Vietnam: A Book of Changes.
