The City
By Vince Aletti

There are only nine photographs in Epstein's new show, but they are all very big and they're as assured as they are ambitious. Since the subject is New York, the work cuts a wide swath through the city, peering through a grimy second-story window onto a bricked-up 42nd Street movie house, looking across a clopped rooftop hedge and the green expanse of Central Park at the skyline, matching scope with sophistication, spontaneity with deliberation. Though he finds it in some of the most unlikely places (see his blue-draped shop window in the back gallery), Epstein never loses sight of beauty, but he also never lets it get complete control.
